Hindu Celebrations

CELEBRATIONS

There are many occasions that are celebrated in Hinduism. The first one is before a baby is born. At this time the mother and father pray for what type of child they want. They also pray so that God may protect the mother and child, and so that the child is born healthy. At birth eth baby is washed and made clean. The father puts a couple drops of honey or ghee on the baby’s mouth using a golden ring. Then the father recites prayer form the scriptures and then writes the sacred syllable ‘AUM’ on the baby’s tongue using a special pen. There is another ceremony after 12 days in which the baby is named. It is believed that the right name for the baby will bring it good luck. A priest is called and he picks a good initial or syllable. The oldest women in the family announces the baby’s name to the rest of the family. The father is supposed to whisper the baby’s name in its ear. Everyone sings songs and eat special sweets afterwards.

Another part in life that they celebrate is when they are having the thread ceremony. This is a very important art of a boys life. This takes place sometime in between the bois seventh and twelfth birthday. The boy is given a scared thread that is made of cotton. It is hung from the left shoulder to the right hip. After this ceremony the boy is counted as a man. They should carry out religious ceremonies and read the Vedas.

Another big celebration is when it someone’s wedding. This is a very joyous time and it is for one hour but the celebrations carry on for seven days. The wedding is to take place either in a temple or a brides house. The bride wears a special jewellery with a red dress and colour their hands and feet with a special dye called hanna. At the first part the brides father welcomes the bridegroom and he is seated under a special canopy. The bride comes and sits beside the groom in front of a special fire. They both hold one end of a cloth that is tied together front the middle and they make 7 laps around the special fire while the prayers are being read.
